SG - the new Russian superhero from the future with Roman Evdokimov and Yuri Kolokolnikov
The Foundation for the Support of the Deaf-Blind "Con-nection” (So-yedinenie) and the Lateral Summer company are preparing to release a joint project - the superhero series "SG: Deafblind/Superhero". The project presentation and pilot show will take place in mid-October, and a little later the first episode will be released online.
2025, Moscow. Deaf-blind Luka works in the laboratory of Professor Novikov, who is trying to correct the human DNA code in order to defeat disease. Luca has no idea that he will soon have to save humanity when the laboratory is attacked by agents from the future, turning people into techno-zombies using audio-visual messages.
Producer Alya Bereslavtseva: “Shooting feature films on a social theme is always difficult - you need to maintain a balance between the problematic and an exciting storyline. We got acquainted with the Con-nection Foundation and immediately understood that we wanted the same thing - to tell the audience about the world of the deaf-blind not from the point of hopelessness and suffering. Try to imagine a world in which deaf-blindness is not a physical handicap, but a superpower that saves people. This is the world of ordinary people and brave heroes, ambitious scientists and risky medical experiments, betrayal and true friendship. This is how the idea of our fantastic interactive thriller came about. This is our world and this is how you need to make films on social topics. First of all, we focused on a conventionally youth audience, which is why the series will be presented in an interactive format - an engaging “game” format. This year we will introduce the pilot and introduce the heroes to the audience, and next year look forward to the continuation of Luka's adventures."
In the main roles, viewers will see Roman Evdokimov (Luke), and Yuri Kolokolnikov (Professor Novikov). Yuri played a scientist who wants to save humanity from disease, but does not even suspect what his methods will lead to.
In Russia, it is customary to ignore the problem of disability, despite the fact that, according to the Levada Center, it affects almost every fifth family. "SG" appeals to a young audience that most actively responds to such statements, and, as the creators hope, will help change the attitude towards people with disabilities in the country. The Con-nection Foundation believes that the project will help raise awareness among Russians about deaf-blind people who continue to remain “invisible” to more than half of the country's population.
Natalya Sokolova, Executive Director of the Con-nection Foundation: “The main task of the project is to increase audience loyalty to people with disabilities, inform about deaf-blind people, draw attention to their problems and help them with adaptation in society. The dissemination of information will also contribute to the development of the project of the All-Russian census of the deaf-blind of the Con-nection Foundation, which will make it possible to identify the wards to form a single base and provide the necessary assistance."
The series will be dedicated to the adventures of a young deaf-blind superhero. Despite his superpowers and gadgets - and almost all of them are completely real - Luka interacts with the environment and the world in the same way as most "ordinary" deaf-blind people. And it is the support of loved ones that will help him get used to fantastic circumstances and confront the enemy.
"SG" is planned to be released in two versions. An interactive one will be released on the Internet, where the viewer will be able to make a choice for the hero, deciding his fate, and at the same time learn how to communicate with deaf-blind people, get to know their way of life and find out how to help them. The non-interactive format of the series is intended for television. But one should not think that this is an exclusively charitable project about the problems of life of people with disabilities, on the contrary, this is a bright adventure super action.
Directors and screenwriters Nata Pokrovskaya and Anton Utkin:
“This is not the first time we have talked about complex things in an entertaining way. Interaction helps to awaken empathy in the viewer / player: taking responsibility for the fate of the hero, he begins to empathize more with him and understand what difficulties he faces. And the younger the audience, the more familiar and exciting it is for the film-game format. "
Slowly, but Russia is still turning to face people with disabilities, including in the field of culture. We are already accustomed to seeing such models at fashion shows, on TV shows, performances and exhibitions appear, in the center of which are people with disabilities. Museums that have not taken care of the accessible environment are shown this on social media, raising public debate. At the same time, as noted in the Con-nection Foundation, the number of films and TV series with the participation of heroes with disabilities remains small - there is not a single non-documentary domestic work about the deaf-blind. Moreover, many people do not even suspect that there are those who neither see nor hear.
It is necessary to speak with a young audience in its language, according to the Con-nection Foundation, and to choose the most understandable forms of information presentation. The interactive format of the series is ideal for the tasks at hand. This is confirmed by a large number of positive responses, high involvement and ratings of series on acute and social topics (“Everything is complicated” - the first interactive film-game about HIV in Russia; “Tolya-Robot” - Russian television social comedy drama).
Natalya Sokolova, Executive Director of the Con-nection Foundation: “Deaf-blindness is one of the most severe forms of disability, in which people have the largest possible number of restrictions on the main categories of life. People with disabilities on the screen are no longer fighting for survival, but live, love, work, suffer, and care for others. For us, this is the first experience of working in such a format, in a cinema format. We experiment and go beyond the usual framework of delivering information to society. We hope that we managed to do this and the audience will appreciate the life story of the deaf-blind Luka."
